Craftivist, Artist, Painter, Public Artist

I'm Sam Harlow Black, a multi media artist from the northern suburbs of Melbourne.  My work life began as a primary and early childhood teacher and art therapist. After having my family I completed a Certificate IV in visual arts before completing a  Bachelor of Textile Design at RMIT University in Brunswick, Melbourne graduating in 2016. I have always been a fanatical creative person and  self-taught painter, knitter, hand spinner and crocheter from a young age. I have just graduated from RMIT with a Masters of Arts (Art in Public Space) which involved producing a  large body of work including perrformance and street art, painting, knitting and creative writing. My greatest love is sharing craft techniques and their healing and social value with groups of people.  Currently I'm continuing to build my art practice based at my home studio.

Through my studies in public art, I've become fascinated by street and performance art and inventing ways to incorporate my quirky, handmade works and craftivism in public spaces. My main themes I'm passionate about are feminism, identity and diversity as well as exploring site specificity and the street artist’s voice in contemporary urban spaces.
